Adapting to new challenges amidst COVID-19

Like many businesses around the world, ADEY has had to quickly adapt in order to continue trading during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Matthew Webber, Group Managing Director, talks about the challenges many businesses are overcoming, including ADEY, and the importance of having an agile and motivated team during these unprecedented times.

‘Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been continuing to manufacture our products and provide key services through our Commercial Water Testing laboratories to support NHS facilities and help businesses as they re-open ‘moth-balled’ commercial buildings which could be at risk of Legionella. Alongside this, and despite the circumstances, our teams have successfully opened the new ADEY in-house manufacturing site in Gloucestershire with production in place from April.

This has not come without its challenges and we have had to adapt quickly to be able to continue to trade and be prepared for a careful onboarding of colleagues back into the business in a safe environment.

Our success in keeping the company open for business is credit to the adaptability, positivity and creative thinking of our people working in all areas of the business. There’s been a huge amount of rapid change but the spirit of the business – that we’re all in this together – has been fundamental in helping to find new ways of working, to support our customers, maintain momentum in the development of products and services, as well as plan for the future. Driving innovation has remained part of our DNA and we will be announcing something new coming very soon.

Matthew explains, ‘With our Head Office and 17 training centres around the UK closed, colleagues have made a success of home working and learning how to use new technology to work remotely. This has been paramount in enabling us to proactively communicate with customers, suppliers, and distributors to support new business and sales, which we are thankful are still ongoing during this time. We are also proud to have quickly adapted our online training programme, supporting installers to develop their skills ready for their return to work. In April alone, the teams delivered magnetic filtration and water treatment online training to more than 1000 installers.

In response to the downturn in activity in our industry, we have not escaped the need to Furlough several of our colleagues. Continuing to keep colleagues engaged whilst out of the business is imperative to a successful re-boarding when the time is right. Part of our strategy was to provide advanced learning and development opportunities for our furloughed colleagues alongside regular communications, social interactions such as quizzes online, and video conference briefings to all colleagues. This engagement has helped retain motivation and momentum.

Not forgetting those who remain in the business, who we are extremely proud of their commitment and hard work during these challenging times. We wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without our teams putting in place and adhering to stringent new health and safety practices and social distancing measures.

Matthew concludes, ‘These are challenging times and I’m very grateful to everyone here at ADEY for their ongoing efforts in keeping the wheels turning and continuing to provide innovative solutions, services and products for our customers and partners.’
