I have thus experimented
with landscapes as mirrors of mental states that are dominated of
one single strong colour and containing strict, graphic
compositions, more or less long exposures and to some extent optical
manipulation.
I believe that the fascination for
physical achievements such as dancing and acrobatics comes not only from
the strength and physical control involved, but also from a longing for a
state of 'lightness', away from obstacles and the forces of gravity. Or
put in other words: a longing to fly.
Rather than creating a narrative
that concludes in a specific result, I am more interested in the ambiguity
of these atmospheres. Photography today is still considered to be a
truthful medium for documenting reality. I therefore find it particularly
suitable for dealing with subjects of surrealism.
Because of my clear graphic
compositions and strive for perfection, ‘In Between’ can be seen to border
to a commercial visual expression. I think it has to do with the fact that
it is seen as old fashioned to produce art that is visually attractive or
beautiful. The overpowering settings make them become even more
old-fashioned. There is a constant presence of attractive
commercial photography and graphics everywhere. Thus the general idea of
beauty is just as much represented through car advertisements and fashion
magazines as through decorative crafts or art.
A large part of my work is based on
my intuition and I very often have a clear vision of the images. This
allows me to create personal images that strive for a sense of beauty and
the ethereal. I value beauty in itself
but I am more interested in a beauty containing an ambiguity that
lets the viewer question the context of the image.
