RACHEL OXLEY

"Rhetoric":  Information Overload: re-mapping the territory.

Rachel Oxley is fascinated by the multifaceted nature of modern day life. Within this context Oxley interested in how we communicate and understand notions of 'location' and 'identity' within modern models of space, e.g. the Internet, mobile phones, radio networks etc. Oxley often uses these 'networked' communications to explore the shifting boundaries of 'local' and 'global' communities.

'Rhetoric' is a live exploration of 'radio space'; a site specific 'conversation' between different radio communities. The installation uses a mix of radio stations combined with Max/Msp interactive technology to explore the dynamics of our daily information intake and our understanding of context. Through using different generations of technology, 'Rhetoric' physically and metaphorically aims to highlight shifts and overlaps in understanding information - how it is conceived and what it actually is.

The installation comprises of five radios broadcasting five independent global radio signals. These signals constantly retune themselves, changing their frequency and volume. The radio speaker in each radio is disconnected and the five independent signals are then fed live into the computer. The data is read and tuned to an evolving score composed in Max/Msp. The audio data is fed back out of the computer into the radio and reconnected to the radio speaker as if unaltered. 'Rhetoric' will be broadcast live on the Internet throughout the duration of the exhibition, with the support of the Community Media Association. It will also be Broadcast intermittently on Hackney community radio; Sound Radio 1503am.
