Help and advice - FAQ's

To help you look after your central heating system here are a few FAQ’s which may help…

Which filter is right for my central heating system?

Your heating engineer will be able to make the best recommendation and advise you which ADEY MagnaClean filter should be installed on your system to give you the best level of protection.

ADEY produces a range of magnetic filters to fit all system shapes and sizes – From a one-bedroom flat up to commercial units for large businesses and industrial applications. It will also depend on what sort of system you have.

Ask your heating engineer or contact us on 01242 546717 for your personal system advice.

Do I need a Magnetic Filter?

Just as an oil filter and regular oil changes protect your car’s engine, a MagnaClean filter and ADEY’s specially formulated MC1+ chemical for MagnaClean filters protect your boiler. A MagnaClean filter is fitted to your existing pipework, usually between the last radiator on the system and the boiler.

A powerful magnet inside the filter captures the circulating black iron oxide sludge, or magnetite, preventing damage to the boiler and other system components.

This provides immediate protect for your central heating system, removing virtually 100% of circulating black sludge, helping you avoid unnecessary maintenance costs. Independent testing* has shown that installing a MagnaClean can reduce your central heating bills by up to 6% every year. This could save you up to £66 a year on your gas bill.

Always speak to your plumbing and heating engineer for the best advice for your central heating system.

MagnaClean is the No.1 magnetic filter brand and is installed in more than two million UK homes.

Does my central heating system need a power-flush?

If you have an older boiler which has been fitted for several years, it is likely that you will have a build-up of sludge in your existing pipework.

If you are experiencing cold spots in your radiators; turning up the boiler thermostat to maintain heat levels; lower heat levels or noisy pipework, your central heating system could benefit from a MagnaCleanse – ADEY’s flushing system flushing process.

MagnaCleanse flushes existing contaminated water from your heating system; cleaning inside radiators, pipes and the boiler; then refilling the system with clean circulating water.

Speak to your heating engineer for the best advice for your central heating system.

What will my installer charge me to fit a MagnaClean?

The cost of installing a MagnaClean will depend on your plumbing and heating engineers’ pricing structure and whether it is being fitted as part of a larger job or as a one-off installation. Speak to your local engineer for a quotation.

How to bleed a radiator?

Before you bleed any radiators, make sure your central heating is switched off.

Bleeding radiators usually requires a radiator key, but with more modern radiators you can use a flat-blade screwdriver. Often finding the radiator key is the hardest part so it’s a good idea to keep it near one of your radiators or near the boiler. Radiator keys can be purchased from hardware or DIY stores.

At the top of the radiator, at one end is a valve. You can attach the radiator key to the square section in the centre or put the end of the screwdriver into the groove.

Hold the key or screwdriver with a cloth and have another cloth ready to catch any escaping drops of water. Then, slowly turn the radiator key or screwdriver anti-clockwise. If air is being expelled from the system, you will hear a hissing sound.

When there is no more air, liquid will come out and the valve will need to be closed quickly. With the more screwdriver-operated valve, liquid is likely to escape as a jet rather than a dribble.

If you are unsure about this process, seek advice from your local heating engineer.

Why is the water in my central heating system black?

As water runs through a central heating system, corrosion occurs in the pipework causing harmful black iron oxide sludge to build up in radiators and pipework.

When this happens, it can damage system components and cause some parts to fail within days. Left untreated, cold areas in radiators can form. Up to 36% of heat output can be lost in this way resulting in wasted energy.

So, black sludge in your central heating system means your boiler is more likely to deteriorate and breakdown and you could be paying more for your heating bills than you need to.

My boiler or heating pipework is noisy – What could be causing it?

Noise within a boiler could be caused by scale or corrosion deposits forming within the boiler heat exchanger. These deposits can restrict the water flow within the heat exchanger causing the water to become trapped and overheat.

The overheated water will then start to steam and boil, expanding within the heat exchanger. Other debris such as sludge can also have a kettling effect on the boiler by collecting around the heat exchanger.

ADEY provides a range of solutions which could help with these problems, such MagnaClean filters and MC1+ and MC3+ chemical cleaner and inhibitor. Speak to your local heating engineer for the best advice for your central heating system.
